Results of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

On Saturday, September 25, 2010, the Overland Park Police Department, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), participated in the first ever Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. This initiative was an opportunity for everyone to safely empty out their medicine cabinets of prescription drugs no longer needed or expired medications. In Overland Park, a total of 281 pounds of pharmaceutical medications were collected at two sites. Nationwide, at more than 4000 sites, 242,000 pounds (121 tons) of pharmaceutical medications were collected. The Drug Take-Back Day was a huge success. It educated the public on the dangers of unused and expired medications, as well as helped to prevent children and teens from gaining access to dangerous drugs.
