Selective Enforcement: I-435 and Antioch (Pt. 2)

On December 5th, members of our Traffic Safety Unit spent a considerable amount of time enforcing the 55mph construction zone west of Antioch on I-435 Highway. During the short amount of time the three officers worked the location, they wrote 18 citations.

This particular location currently ranks as the #9 location for accidents in the city limits of Overland Park, with a current year-to-date total of 57 through December 1st.

Since schools had not yet resumed classes from the holiday break, yesterday was a perfect opportunity to utilize our School Resource Officers (SRO’s) to help assist our traffic officers with a little enforcement of that area.

In a little less than three hours, they issued a total of 59 citations. Just like on the 5th, the overall speeds were very fast considering the location is clearly marked as a 55mph construction zone. Westbound traffic was issued 27 citations with speeds ranging from 75-85mph. Eastbound traffic had 29 violators who were issued citations for traveling between 75 and 85mph.

The overall mission of our enforcement efforts is to try to change driver behavior. Countless studies have proven that speeding is a major threat to the public’s safety and thus warrants our constant attention.
