This past week, officers with the Community Policing section received specific training in order to be certified to ride police-issued bicycles.
The intent of this training is part of our on-going initiative to reduce crime and strengthen community interaction. The officers will patrol this summer and focus on areas such as high crime neighborhoods, as well as city parks and trails.
An officer patrolling on a bike has several advantages over a patrol officer in many environments. First of all, bikes are less threatening than patrol vehicles and allows them to be more approachable than in a car. This will allow the officer to have more contacts with the public than those in patrol vehicles. Officers on bicycles can also go in areas and terrain that traditional patrol vehicles can't.
